My my, it has been a long time since I have reviewed products from an Etsy shop but the time has come. For my recent cottage trip (which I'm itching - no pun intended - to do again), I wanted to be prepared for the many bugs and bites cottage life has to offer. I searched the internet for DEET free all natural bug spray and I'll tell ya, there is a lot out there. Not very many from Ontario though (from my research anyway)! All in all, I came to the conclusion, if I'm going to go all natural and DEET free, why not try Etsy. I searched locally and came across Georgina Naturals. I have a coupon code that will be listed at the end of the blog post!
Taken directly from the Etsy page, here is a brief description of the brand. "Georgina Naturals is a 100% natural body care company based in Perth, Ontario. Handcrafted in small batches to ensure quality and care, all of our products made with the environment and your family's health in mind and do not contain any artificial fragrances, colours or preservatives. " I love the simplicity of everything regarding the brand. Design, materials, ingredients, and the quirky names make it even better!
Let's talk about the duo I bought.
Both products are available for purchase individually as well.
The Bah, Hum Bug!
100% Natural Bug Spray was what I was originally after but I couldn't resist the duo. When I get a mosquito bite, it swells up and becomes very itchy. I figured it was worth a try considering I usually go for an Antihistamine like Benedryl or After Bite.
"Banish bugs naturally with this pure blend of insect repelling essential oils, including citronella, lemongrass and rosemary. Deet free and family friendly!"
The spray nozzle dispenses the perfect amount and spreads it out. You definitely do not get a baby squirt out of this guy!
You definitely get a lot of product in there.
List of ingredients
One spray shot about 5 inches away from surface. As you can see it is slightly slick looking and quite liquid-y.
I did not find it to be oily at all, despite what it looks like in the bottle.
It blends right in, you can hardly tell it's there.
"But Carly", you may ask, "Does it work?". My answer is, yes and no. Yes directly applied to the skin, and applied every hour or so depending on the conditions. And no on top of clothing. I had more luck than some of my friends did with this product but perhaps it depends on application. I applied it everywhere skin was exposed, except my face. I probably could have, but did not need to.
The first night I applied it over my clothing... no dice my friends, no dice. They managed to get me a few times and I ended up using a DEET based one to fight off the very persistent mosquitoes that we had. I got quite a few on my legs and bum but nothing too crazy.
The next night we spent outside, I applied it before I put on my pants and sweater. I also sprayed it over my clothes, concentrating on my bum area again. If I got any mosquito bites that night and the other nights, it was less than I could count on 1 hand. That is a success in my book. Mosquitoes usually love me.
Like I mentioned, it didn't work as well for my friends at the cottage, but it worked well for my mom at home. Around dusk, they tend to come out while we are lounging in the backyard. We both gave ourselves a few sprays and had no problem. A bite or two each but that is nothing compared to how many we can both get.
And now for what helped with the bites. I wish I had a photo of a bite before, during and after.
"This specially formulated bar is infused with the powerful healing herbs nettle, comfrey and calendula, which help relieve itchy, irritated skin. Perfect for rashes, insect bites and other allergic reactions, we’ve left this bar unscented for extra sensitive skin. A perfect companion on any camping or cottage trip!"
With a quirky name like this, how can it not be awesome. No really, it is pretty awesome!
It takes a few minutes to achieve actual relief from itchy-ness and irritation caused by bites but once it works, it really does.
Olea Europaea (Extra Virgin Olive Oil), Calendula Officinalis (Calendula Flowers), Urtica dioica (Nettle), Symphytum officinale (Comfrey Root), Cera Alba (Beeswax).
I was expecting it to be aligned with the edges, laying completely flat and completely fitted, not that it really matters.
The texture is like, hard Vaseline. Not as easy to manipulate but definitely "creamy" to the touch. It can be used on many irritations including rashes. It leaves a very slight sheen to the skin (one I could not catch with my camera) but hardly noticeable.
My best tip for curing mosquito bites from itching and to promote healing is a with a few easy steps. Make an "X" on the bite with your nail, don't dig too hard, just make a noticeable indent. Than apply whatever balm or solution you have for the bite. I did this with Life's An Itch and many were hardly visible or gone within 2 days.
Will I repurchase this duo when the time comes? Yes I would or buy them individually depending on the need. It will take me a while to get through them both, especially considering Summer is basically over.
Do you have a go-to bug spray or healing product for bug bites? Do you love Etsy as much as I do?
